Who are the X-Men?
The X-Men are a team where most members are mutants; humans born with superhuman abilities activated by the X-Gene. The X-Men team was founded by Professor Xavier and their aim is to promote peace and equality between mutans and non-mutants.
Located in a mansion in Salem Center, Xavier´s School for Gifted Youngsters also serves as a training site for members of the X-Men. Professor Xavier locates and recruits mutants from all over the world, offering them a chance to explore how to use their powers for good and live together with other mutants.
In the comic book The X-Men #1, published by Marvel Comics in September 1963, the founding members of the X-Men are Angel-Archangel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Jean Grey (Marvel Girl). Professor Xavier and Magneto also make their first appearances in this issue. Examples of mutants who joined the team fairly early on are Havok, Polaris, Mimic, and Changeling.
Since then, dozens of mutants (and even some non-mutants) of varying origin and backgrounds have joined the X-Men, both in the comic books and in the movie franchise. Examples of well-known members are Wolverine, Colossus, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde.
